Week 9 of #52AncestorsIn52Weeks Prompt is "Multiples."
If you aren't already following me on Facebook make sure you go follow me there!
Apparently I was the one to suggest the theme "Multiples", if only I could remember what I was thinking of when I made the suggestion because it took a while to decide where I wanted to go with this. I've already previously written about my nana Joan and her twin sister Jane so I didn't want to go there (check out part one of their story here). I've also written about Bryon Golladay, my husband's 4th cousin, who was one of 3 sets of twins born to his parents (read about his short life here). Which you'd think that would be rare to have 3 sets of twins, but I've also written about the wife of my 2nd cousin 3x removed who was also one of 3 sets of twins (check out her story here). I didn't really want to write about twins. Maybe about someone who has experienced multiple loses like my 1st cousin 4x removed Jesse Burrus who lost 2 of her children and her husband in the span of a year (check out Jesse's story here). All week I struggled with who I was going to write about, I clicked all around my tree at the different branches seeing if anyone stuck out. Then today I finally said ok we are just gonna check out this Poindexter line and see if anyone at all comes up while I research. The second name I clicked out on had a story titled "Three Wives". Well hotdog sometimes your ancestors just say HEY COME FIND ME!.
Robert M Poindexter was born on March 26, 1840 in Monroe County, Kentucky. He was the 8th of 10 children born to his mother Fannie Coe, who died when Robert was 10, and the 8th of 15 children to his father Archibald Poindexter. At 16 Robert married his 1st cousin on his mother's side Nancy Angeline Coe, who was 18. Together they had 3 children, John (1857), Mary Elizabeth (1860), and Jesse (1866). Robert was a farmer and enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, but in 1864 he deserted the south and enlisted in the US Army. After the birth of their third child Nancy passed away.
Robert, now 26, immediately married Nancy's younger sister Gemima Jane Coe, 18. They had two children, Archie (1872) and Gertrude (1874). Their marriage lasted about 10 years before the couple divorced and both remarried in 1877. Gemima married Isaac Newton Long, she passed away in 1892. Robert married Martha Thompson and they had 2 children together, Walter (1882) and Albert (1885). Robert died at age 55 in 1895. Martha remarried John Willis, they had a son Andrew (1894). Martha passed away in 1920.
Between all of Robert's 7 children they had 53 children who lived past birth.
Robert Poindexter is my 3rd great granduncle. His wives' Nancy and Gemima Coe were my 1st cousin 5x removed.
