Jesse Tiner Burrus was born on February 12, 1873 in Missouri. She was
the youngest child born to Jemina Poindexter and Ruben Burrus. Jesse
had 4 half siblings from her mother and 9 half siblings from her father,
as well as one full sister. When she was just 3 her father died, and
one year later her mother died as well. She and her sister Sarah stayed
with different family until she married her first husband at age 15.
Jesse married Laborn Deaton Halbrook on December 14, 1888. The couple settled into a home in Dent County in Missouri and started their family of 7 children. Susan (1889), Fountain *who passed away at 10 months old* (1891), John (1892), Rubin (1894), James (1894), Dollie (1897), and Talmage (1900).
Jesse stayed home taking care of the children while Laborn worked as a steelworker at Sligo Furnace. In April of 1906 the first of several tragedies occurred. Susan, who was 16 died. In November of that year James, age 11, passed away as well.
On April 11 1907 Laborn was working when a scaffold in the furnace when the scaffold broke throwing him and two others 48 feet to the ground. He was taken to the hospital but died the next morning from his injuries. Jesse was left a widow with 4 children.
A year later in February 1908 Jesse married a Jess Talley. Jess was a widower and a farmer with no children. The couple were married for 5 years before Jesse died on September 20 1913.
