Mabel Hancock Hill

Mabel Hancock was born on January 22, 1934 in McLean County, Kentucky. She was the 5th of 9 children born to her parents Pauline Crabtree and Marvin Hancock. Marvin was a farmer and Pauline stayed home to take care of the children. In 1947 Mabel's baby sister Dorothy died at age 2 from an upper respiratory infection. Mabel attended school and was one smart cookie, landing herself on many honor roll lists. She graduated high school in 1953 in a class of only 30 seniors.

On June 27 1957 Mabel married Townes Estil Hill. Estil was 9 years older than Mabel, a Navy WWII veteran, and had a 5 year old son from a previous marriage. The couple lived in Calhoun and in 1966 they welcomed daughter Tammy to the family. Estil owned and operated Hills Garage in the 50s and 60s and was also an electrician. He was employed by the McLean County General Hospital and McLean County School system as an electrician for many years before his retirement. Mabel worked for General Electric for 21 years and was a bus drive for McLean County Schools for 16 years. She also made and sold cakes. After 49 years of marriage Estil passed away on February 13 2007.
