On September 3, 1947 JT and his father Arlie had been out in their car when the car stalled on the side of the road. Arlie got out and was fixing the car, while 5 year old JT started playing on the opposite side of the road as his father. Arlie eventually got the car to start and JT began to run across the road. Arlie shouted for him to stop, that a car was coming.
The car that was coming down the highway saw JT bolt out in front of him, and swerved out of the way, but when JT saw the car he turned around to head back to where he had come from, directly in front of the oncoming vehicle. The driver veered again but the right fender of his car struck JT.
Arlie rushed him to Lubbock Memorial Hospital but there was nothing the doctors could do. JT was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Left to mourn his memory were both his parents and 10 siblings.
