Dorothy always had an incredible love for music and singing. She sang in the church and school choir, and even attended the national music camp in Michigan. Her love for music became her life long passion. She attended the University of Kansas and Southwester College where she graduated with a degree in music in 1950. In college she also joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority becoming a "sister for life."
After college, on July 30, 1950 she married James Dobbs, who she had gone to Winfield High School with. James had enlisted in the army right after high school to fight in WWII before also going to Southwestern College.
The newlyweds settled into their hometown of Winfield and had two daughters, Stephanie (1953) and Jami (1956). James went to work with Dorothy's father who had now started his own accounting firm. Dorothy taught music in elementary school for several years. Eventually she got a job in Oxford Kansas at the high school where she taught vocal performance for 21 years before retiring. Even after retirement her love of music meant that she continued to substitute teach as needed.
Dorothy also found another cause she was passionate about. She spent many years working with the Winfield American Legion Auxiliary, a group which provides services for women veterans. Later she would become the state historian for the ALA which consisted of archiving important documents such as newsletters, correspondence, handbooks, program information, etc.
On March 4, 1997 James passed away. Just two years later on March 17, 1999 Dorothy joined him in the afterlife. Dorothy left behind her two daughters, 3 grandchildren, and her younger sister. She also left behind the love of music to her daughters who also have their mothers passion for music.
